How to Bid for an IPO via UPI: Mandate Timing & Cut-off Price Rules

Applying for an initial public offering in India using UPI 2.0 is fast and seamless, but minor mistakes like skipping the cut-off price or missing the mandate authorization window can disqualify an otherwise profitable bid. Here is how active investors navigate the bidding workflow.

The 4-Step UPI Bidding Lifecycle

STEP 1

Enter Demat & UPI ID

Log in to your discount broker (Zerodha, Groww, Angel One) and select the active issue. Input your correct VPA handle (e.g. @okhdfcbank, @ybl).

STEP 2

Tick 'Cut-Off Price'

Always check the cut-off price checkbox for retail bids. This binds your application to the final ceiling price discovered in book-building.

STEP 3

Authorize Auto-Debit Block

Open GPay, PhonePe, or BHIM. Approve the mandate request with your UPI PIN. Funds stay inside your savings account earning interest until allotment.

STEP 4

Debit vs Auto-Revocation

On basis of allotment day, successful bidders see the blocked amount debited. Unallotted applicants receive instant unblocking of funds.

Why Cut-Off Price is Mandatory for Retail Bids

When an IPO issues shares within a price band (such as ₹475 to ₹500), retail investors have the option to bid at a fixed price or choose the cut-off price. If an issue is heavily subscribed, the final offer price will inevitably be set at the top band (₹500). If you manually bid at ₹495, your application is technically valid but disqualified during allotment selection.

By monitoring real-time market trends and tracking live subscription demand before applying, bidders can observe whether qualified institutions (QIBs) are bidding at the upper cap. When institutional demand is strong, ticking cut-off price is the only way to safeguard your ticket.

Checking Allotment & Mandate Release

Once the issue closes, the registrar reconciles all exchange bids and prepares the allotment basis. To confirm whether your application was successful, visit the official registrar allotment tracking portal using your PAN or Application Number. If shares are allotted, your demat account receives credit on the subsequent business day, while the UPI block is converted into a settled debit.
